It has been a nature reserve since 2000, with oaks 400 to 600 years old, and you can walk there from town on a marked trail.
About the place
The reserve lies on the Breite plateau, within the municipality, near the county road to Șaeș, about 2.5 km in a straight line from the Clock Tower. It was declared a protected area in 2000 and is part of the Sighișoara–Târnava Mare Natura 2000 site. Pedunculate and sessile oaks aged 400 to 600 years stand scattered across the pasture; one of the oldest, at the forest edge, measures more than 7 m around.
Wild orchids and other rare plants grow in the grass, and woodpeckers, songbirds, bats and butterflies live among the oaks. A trail marked with a red stripe starts from Ana Ipătescu Street, climbs to the plateau and continues towards Stejăreni; the first stretch is steep.
Good to know
- Bring water and walking shoes: the climb from town is steep.
- Animals graze on the plateau, sometimes guarded by sheepdogs; keep your distance.
- It is a protected area: do not break branches, pick plants or disturb the animals.
