About the place
Of the original 14 towers, nine survive: the Clock Tower and the Tinsmiths', Tanners', Ropemakers', Butchers', Furriers', Tailors', Shoemakers' and Blacksmiths' towers. Each was defended and maintained by a town guild, and today they are listed monuments together with the walls between them.
The citadel is small, so you can see them all on one walk. The Tinsmiths' Tower stands in the south of the citadel on the street of the same name, one of the citadel entrances passes through the Tailors' Tower, and the Shoemakers' Tower in the north has a tall roof and an outside wooden stair. The Blacksmiths' Tower stands next to the Monastery Church.
Good to know
- Start at the Clock Tower, head to the Tinsmiths' Tower, climb to the Church on the Hill, follow the west side past the Ropemakers', Butchers' and Furriers' towers, and come back through the north, past the Tailors' and Shoemakers' towers.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the citadel streets are cobbled and sloping.
- For photos of the towers and walls, also walk the lanes below the citadel.
