Why it's on the list

It runs on a stretch of the Târgu Mureș–Praid narrow-gauge line (1915–1997) rebuilt in 2011, and in 2026 it ran trips over the 1 May holiday weekend too.

About the place

The locomotive was built in 1949 in Chrzanów, Poland, and burns coal and hardwood. It pulls five open gondola-type cars along the narrow-gauge line that linked Târgu Mureș and Praid from 1915 to 1997. The Sovata–Câmpu Cetății section was rebuilt for tourists in 2011.

The 14 km ride takes about two hours there and back, with a stop at Câmpu Cetății while the locomotive moves to the other end of the train. There you find trout farms and the Mini Niraj visitor centre. The train runs mainly on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and on holiday weekends.

Good to know

  • Tickets are sold only at the Gara Mică ticket office, not online; in summer arrive 45–60 minutes early.
  • The cars are open: bring a light jacket, even in summer.
  • Smoke from the engine can leave soot; avoid light-coloured clothes.
